Jiujitsu Injuries

Jiujitsu has grown to be one of the most popular sports in the world. Originating from the Samurai of feudal Japan, to the current sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as we know it today, its popularity has grown immensely. Because the sport is so popular there is a large number of injuries due to its close contact competition. These injuries can cause a long delay in competition training and overall well being of jiujitsu practitioners.

Types of Jiujitsu Injuries:

Because of its close contact and focus on joint locks and submissions, injuries can occur often and be a hinderance in our daily lives. There are two types of injuries found in Jiujitsu:

  • Acute Injuries: these are injuries that occur during training or within 48 hours post-training. The most common acute injuries found in the sport of jiujitsu include sprains, strains, fractures and dislocations. The type of pain felt with these injuries can feel like sharp, stabbing, throbbing pain.

  • Overuse Injuries: these are injuries that occur due to overtraining or new practitioners doing too much training too soon. The most common types of injuries here include nerve impingements, fatigue and tendinosis/tendinitis. This type of pain is described as dull, achy, numb/tingling pain.
